Our Connection to Breakthrough T1D
At the age of 5, I was diagnosed with type one diabetes. It was a life altering diagnosis and for many years I feared of what I would be do achieve in life with this disease. I was afraid type one diabetes would hold me back. If only 5 year old me could see 28 year old me, fishing off shore, in shore, scalloping, diving, doing all the things I was afraid I couldn’t do. This disease can control so many things in your life, but not your mindset. I have to make countless unspoken decisions everyday to keep my blood sugars in a good, healthy range that no one can see on the surface. All these decisions can be when do I need to do a pump change? A continuous glucose monitors change? Do I need to bring supplies for a finger poke if my CGM fails? Do I need to have shots with me if my pump fails? Will my backup pump I brought work correctly? If I have to bring insulin with me, how will I keep it cold? In turn though, making so many important decisions allows me to live my life to the fullest.
I can vision and dream about a world that we find a cure for type one diabetes. That I am not making life threatening decision every hour of everyday. That one small thing forgotten could be the difference in a fun day, or a trip to the hospital.
Breakthrough T1D has a special place in my heart, as it does many people. They are consistently funding research to find a cure. They fight a battle behind the scenes, fighting to find a cure. Breakthrough keeps the hope alive that there will one day be a cure. They show it every day with the advancements in technology to make type ones lives easier, while researching and studying potential cures at the same time. They don’t stop fighting, which gives me the drive to not stop fighting.
